Acts of the Apostles

Chapter 20

Personal study: The numbers on the left side are verse numbers.

1-6 Not just a travel-log, but a picture of the hardships that Paul & Co encountered in the mission field. What would be your greatest challenge if you tried to assist Paul?

7 "On the first day of the week…" By this time Christians were meeting on "the Lord’s Day" (Sunday). See Matthew 28:1 for the primary reason to meet on this day.

"They broke bread…" Can you see the value in the old fashioned pot luck church dinner?

Comment on our need for structured formal gatherings as well as informal gatherings to build up the church.

8-12 Through Paul, the Lord healed the man who fell asleep during the sermon, but note that they all return upstairs and continue eating and talking.

13-16 Paul probably avoided Ephesus for 2 reasons. The last time he was there his enemies caused a riot. Also Paul was rushing to get to Jerusalem.

Already 2 Jewish festivals have been mentioned, and no doubt Paul and many others continued to celebrate the major festivals. What benefit for Christians might there be today in celebrating some Jewish holidays?

17-35 Paul’s farewell to Ephesian Elders: What did he say about himself?

What did he ask the Elders to do?

Note well: What does Paul say will build them up in vs. 32?

Historically where have the real dangers come from that the Church had to face?

Which do you think is greater: Dangers from the outside or dangers from within?

24 Paul is driven to "finish the race" What can you learn from the following:

  • Phil 3:12-14

  • Gal 2:2

  • 2 Tim 4:7

  • Heb 12:1-3

  • I Cor 9:24-25

Why is it vital not only that we finish whatever task the Lord has given us to do, but also to finish it with honor and integrity?

36-38 We see tenderness between these early Church leaders. How important is that?

What are your personal resources in facing any and all dangers ahead?
